Crossing the Manhattan Bridge - September 11, 2008
This morning I was coming across the Manhattan bridge on the
D train...just like I did 7 years ago today.
As we were coming up out of the Brooklyn tunnel,
the train operator seemed to go 'off script'...
He pointed out the American flag on the Brooklyn Bridge.
He asked people to take a moment of silence and spoke
about people we lost and people that survived. He said
he was proud to be a New Yorker and proud to be an
American. He didn't say too much...just enough...right
from the heart. Having already positioned myself
near the window while we were underground...I was
looking for a moment like that...and he provided it.
I wanted to thank him but I had no idea which car
he was in. I got out and walked to the front of my car,
and wow...he was right there. I told him how much I appreciated
what he said and that it was beautiful. We shook
hands and shared some words. It was a really nice
and rare moment of two New York City strangers connecting.
It can be a cool thing when people go 'off script' in life...
